Product comparison

Exposure management: ten different approaches compared

Different operating models. One consistent evidence standard.

Exposure-related products solve different jobs: discovering external infrastructure, testing applications, validating controls, collecting threat intelligence, or coordinating preventive work. Compare the required workflow and the exact offering before comparing feature counts. These ten analyses use the same evidence rules and include both useful capabilities and boundaries to verify.

Documentation-based analysis, prepared October 30, 2026. This is not a hands-on test or a numerical performance ranking. Offerings are ordered by Verified feature count using the same eight research areas as the category comparison. Equal counts are tied. This measures documented coverage in this research, not overall product quality; incomplete evidence can lower a count.

Guardare Unified Exposure Management

Documented focus

Guardare’s platform page describes connecting security and IT tools, relating users, devices, and applications, and presenting prioritized recommendations with assignment and tracking workflows. Vulnerability scanning is also included in the core package according to supplied package confirmation received October 30, 2026.

When to evaluate it

Consider it when the buying problem is coordinating preventive work across tools you already operate. A useful pilot should follow one recommendation from its source evidence into an accepted owner and a verified change.

Trade-offs and boundaries

The platform depends on the quality, permissions, and freshness of connected data. Connected endpoint or cloud tools retain their own protection and execution roles. Confirm scanning targets, authentication methods, scheduling, coverage, and operational limits in a pilot. Vulnerability scanning and attack-path visualization do not by themselves establish autonomous exploitation or breach simulation. The core-package scanning information is supplied confirmation, not an independent test.

Primary platform page checked October 30, 2026. Attack-path/base-package confirmation retained from October 27; vulnerability scanning core inclusion supplied October 30, 2026. The scanning addition has not been independently verified.

CrowdStrike Falcon Exposure Management

Documented focus

The Falcon Exposure Management page documents asset discovery, risk-based prioritization, external attack surface management, attack-path analysis, and integrations with other tools. Those exposure capabilities deserve consideration in their own right.

When to evaluate it

Consider it when exposure work needs to fit an existing Falcon operating model, or when the trial can establish useful coverage through the proposed integrations. Demonstrate the exposure workflow using the exact deployment and subscription you would buy.

Trade-offs and boundaries

An effective Falcon EDR, SIEM, identity, or MDR product is not evidence that its capabilities are included in Exposure Management. Confirm sensor requirements, third-party data coverage, response permissions, and separately licensed components. No general service-quality or employee-size claim is established by this page.

Primary Exposure Management page checked October 30, 2026; package entitlement requires quote confirmation.

Tenable One Foundation — base package

Documented focus

The retained Tenable One licensing research distinguishes Foundation inventory, third-party connectors, prioritization, and ticketing from the attack-path functions in Advanced. Those documented exposure functions are assessed without treating an add-on as a default entitlement.

When to evaluate it

Consider it when you need a consolidated exposure program and can map the required functions to the proposed Tenable One package. Trial the data sources and workflow that would actually be included in your contract.

Trade-offs and boundaries

The retained licensing record places Attack Path Analysis in Advanced and identity security in an add-on. Verify those terms against a current quote. The licensing and product pages could not be retrieved in this session, so this is retained evidence rather than a new October 30 feature check.

Retained licensing research dated October 27–28, 2026. Primary-page recheck blocked October 30, 2026; reconfirm current entitlements.

Detectify Surface Monitoring and Application Scanning

Documented focus

Detectify’s current site describes Surface Monitoring, authenticated application scanning, API scanning, payload-based tests, and an internal scanner. It also names Jira, Slack, and Azure DevOps as finding destinations.

When to evaluate it

Consider it when application and product-security teams need reproducible findings across web applications and APIs. A useful pilot includes an authenticated workflow and an issue that a developer can reproduce and retest.

Trade-offs and boundaries

A collection of scanning products is not automatically one licensed package. Confirm which scanners and environments are included, authentication setup, safe testing boundaries, and ownership of the resulting work. Application testing does not establish person-level identity-risk analysis or a full enterprise attack-path graph.

Primary product site checked October 30, 2026; module and package inclusion require confirmation.

Microsoft Defender External Attack Surface Management

Documented focus

Microsoft’s Defender EASM documentation describes recursive discovery from known assets, an external infrastructure inventory, and vulnerability and infrastructure context for identifying exposure priorities.

When to evaluate it

Consider it when the starting requirement is visibility into internet-facing infrastructure. Seed the discovery with known assets, review inferred relationships, and compare confirmed and disputed inventory records.

Trade-offs and boundaries

Defender EASM and Microsoft Security Exposure Management are different named offerings. Do not import Defender for Endpoint, Sentinel, identity protection, or Security Exposure Management attack graphs into an EASM feature checklist. Verify current billing, connector behavior, and the owner who acts on discovered issues.

Primary Defender EASM documentation checked October 30, 2026; purchase terms and adjacent products are outside this evidence.

Prisma Cloud / Cortex Cloud transition scope

Documented focus

The Prisma Cloud page now also presents Cortex Cloud. It describes cloud posture, workload and application protection, and risk prioritization across development, infrastructure, and runtime contexts.

When to evaluate it

Consider it when the requirement centers on cloud applications and workloads. Use a representative cloud account and follow one issue through its code, configuration, identity, and runtime context where those components are licensed.

Trade-offs and boundaries

Confirm the exact Prisma Cloud or Cortex Cloud offering, edition, migration terms, and licensed components. Cortex Exposure Management and Cortex XDR are not interchangeable names for this cloud scope. A broad cloud platform page does not establish every function in a base subscription.

Primary Prisma Cloud page checked October 30, 2026; current quote and transition scope require confirmation.

Censys Exposure Management

Documented focus

The reference overview places Censys in external asset discovery and exposure analysis. Current primary-source details were not accessible in this research session.

When to evaluate it

Include it in a discovery-focused evaluation when the requirement is to find and attribute internet-facing infrastructure. Compare a known inventory with the discovered set and review disputed ownership.

Trade-offs and boundaries

Do not infer internal endpoint coverage, native remediation execution, or a particular entitlement from an external discovery description. Ask for the current product scope, discovery methodology, attribution controls, API terms, and package documentation before using it in a feature score.

Primary-page retrieval was blocked October 30, 2026. Focus is a secondary-source overview; feature and package verification remain open.

Cymulate Exposure Management and Security Validation

Documented focus

The reference overview describes an approach combining exposure work with security validation. The current primary product and entitlement details could not be retrieved in this session.

When to evaluate it

Include it when the requirement is to test a security-control assumption rather than only collect findings. Ask for a safe validation scenario, the control being assessed, and evidence of what the exercise actually demonstrated.

Trade-offs and boundaries

Treat simulation coverage, tested attack techniques, production permissions, and exposure-management packaging as questions to verify. A successful test of one control is not proof of prevention across every route or environment.

Primary-page retrieval was blocked October 30, 2026. Secondary overview only; current feature and package verification remain open.

Flare Threat Exposure Management

Documented focus

The reference overview emphasizes exposed credentials and external threat monitoring. The primary product page could not be retrieved during this session.

When to evaluate it

Include it when the operational question is how to discover, triage, and act on information exposed outside your environment. Ask for a controlled example that demonstrates context, validation, ownership, and response.

Trade-offs and boundaries

Do not treat external intelligence as equivalent to internal vulnerability assessment or a confirmed attack path. Verify covered sources, collection boundaries, data handling, false-positive review, and the response work the platform actually performs.

Primary-page retrieval was blocked October 30, 2026. Secondary overview only; current feature and package verification remain open.

Mandiant Attack Surface Management

Documented focus

The reference overview describes Mandiant’s attack-surface discovery offering. The primary URL returned no usable product text in this research session, so current product details remain unverified here.

When to evaluate it

Include it in an external-discovery trial where attribution, acquired environments, or distributed infrastructure are central requirements. Require a current offering description and a demonstration with assets you can independently verify.

Trade-offs and boundaries

Confirm current availability, product naming, contract scope, export access, and support before comparing capabilities. Other Google Cloud or Mandiant services do not automatically belong to the assessed ASM offering.

Primary URL checked October 30, 2026 but returned no usable product text. Current product verification remains open.

Use the same pilot for each candidate

  1. Name the assets, data sources, business service, and operating owner.
  2. Inspect a discovered asset and the evidence behind a priority.
  3. Trace the proposed action into approval, execution, and reassessment.
  4. Map every required function to the quoted product, module, integration, and entitlement.
  5. Record what remains unverified, including package terms, scale, support, and total operating effort.

Primary verification is incomplete for Censys, Cymulate, Flare, and Mandiant. Their focus descriptions are secondary-source orientation, not verified feature assertions. Tenable’s analysis uses the retained licensing record. No scores are calculated from these evidence gaps.
